The Cuban government with the help of American scientists has begun an initiative to help protect their shores from overfishing, specifically the over-fishing of sharks. Many of the sharks found in Florida were born born and grew up near the unspoiled coast of Cuba. The partnership hopes to keep Cuba’s shores unspoiled by development, and at the same time, spread awareness of the importance of sharks to the overall health of the ocean.
“If we effectively implement those actions down in Cuba, we will probably see an improvement in Florida,” said Jorge Angulo-Valdés, a Cuban scientist at the University of Havana and a visiting faculty member at the University of Florida. “Some species will recover in five years.”
These environmental talks show the the relationship between Cuba and the US is beginning to change.
