A woman fishing from the beach caught a large hammerhead shark, which, although exciting, is not a rare occurrence along Florida beaches. The story is getting a lot more attention because of the irresponsible lack of care taken for the shark before releasing it.

There is never a guarantee that a shark, or any species, will survive being caught by hook and line, after it is released, but responsible catch and release practices are key to giving them the best chance.

The great hammerhead species is prohibited from harvest, so a quick release is mandatory. The FWC is investigating the incident.
