Shark Bite Survivor Vows to Continue Ocean Rescue Missions Despite Injury
In an extraordinary act of heroism, diver Jeff Joel found himself on the receiving end of a shark’s gratitude, enduring a bite while rescuing it from a fishing net off the coast of Florida. Despite receiving 40 stitches to his right arm, Joel remains steadfast in his commitment to aiding marine creatures in distress.
Joel was diving amidst a group of lemon sharks when one, entangled in a fishing net, caught his attention. A video shows Joel wrestling with the net ensnared around the shark’s head, an endeavor proving more challenging than anticipated. Just as he was about to free the shark, the frightened animal, in a frantic bid to escape, bit Joel on the arm. Despite this unexpected twist, Joel managed to free the shark, which quickly swam away, and he was promptly treated by first responders.
Reflecting on the incident, Joel emphasized his unwavering dedication to helping marine creatures, stating he would willingly repeat the experience if it meant saving an animal in distress. “Anytime I see a shark or any animal in distress, I’m gonna help them,” he asserted. Joel’s brave actions have not gone unnoticed. St. Mary’s Medical Center in West Palm Beach hosted a ceremony honoring Joel for his courageous rescue of the shark.
