Why Florida is Attracting More Than Just Sun-Seekers: The Rise in Shark Bites
In an alarming revelation, Florida has once again been identified as the leader in unprovoked shark bites in the United States, as per a new report from the Florida Museum of Natural History. Despite global shark bites returning to near-average levels in 2025 and a general decrease in unprovoked shark bites across the country over the past five years, Florida’s numbers continue to be a cause for concern. The state accounted for 38% of worldwide incidents last year, a figure that’s hard to overlook as beach season fast approaches.
The International Shark Attack File, a research group within the Florida Museum of Natural History, recorded a total of 65 unprovoked shark bites worldwide last year, which was slightly below the 10-year average of 72. Out of these, 11 bites occurred in Florida, making it the state with the highest number of such incidents, even though the number has decreased compared to previous years. Volusia County, often dubbed the ‘shark bite capital of the world’, was responsible for over half of Florida’s reported bites. As beachgoers prepare for the upcoming season, these statistics serve as a reminder of the need for caution and awareness in Florida’s waters.
