An 11 foot was caught be surf fisherman Zach Wolf on Tuesday. The catch has proven to be a helpful event for biologists and shark research. The female tiger shark has a tag, which Wolf jotted down quickly just before releasing the shark.
“It’s another piece to this mysterious puzzle,” said research biologist John Carlson with the NOAA Southeast Fisheries Science Center in Panama City Beach.
NOAA Fisheries scientists would later be astounded to find the last time they saw the shark was when it was just a 32-inch pup — 10 years ago from the exact date the shark was again caught by Wolk.
“It’s amazing that it was caught 10 years ago to the day, but even more astonishing is this is the longest recapture we’ve gotten on a shark,” Carlson said. “To have a shark at liberty for 10 years is really interesting for us.”
Thanks to responsible surf fishermen, like Mr. Wolf, scientist can gain valuable bits of information that help protect these incredible sharks.
